We are fully in the swing of winter here on Minnesota's North Shore...and I still haven't sealed my windows with plastic for the season.
I'm sure there are fellow frosty homeowners who know just what I mean. Every winter I make the run to the hardware store to buy sheets of plastic to seal my windows in hopes of trapping in a little bit more heat. When temperatures dip below 0 in the Duluth area and winds can gust up to 60 mph regularly, every degree matters.
As a child, I have memories of the big to-do in my childhood Duluth area home of making sure all our windows were sealed tight with clear plastic...and the inevitable frustration that occurred when pets (or children) poked holes in that plastic. Now that I'm an adult, I always start out with good intentions of sealing up my windows as soon as the weather starts to shift in November. But here we are in Duluth, in January and I've still yet to start the project. It's not that there isn't a good reason to.
According to the US Department of Energy, heat gain and loss through windows are responsible for 25-30% of heating and cooling energy use. That means that every time you run your heater or air conditioning (yes, it matters in the summer too!), up to 30% of that usage is lost. As someone who's living on a tight budget, those numbers matter. But my life is busy, and it can be hard to fit in yet another seasonal chore into my long list of to-do's. I think it's time for me to admit I need a more permanent solution like replacing windows in our Duluth house.
Energy efficient replacement windows can be a game changer when it comes to keeping your house warm in the winter and cool in the summer, without breaking the bank. A smart investment up front can lead to decades of savings.
There are a lot of things you'll want to consider when it comes to picking out your new replacement windows and working with a local window company near you in the Duluth area. Factors like window glazing, window frame type, and how the window operates all influence energy efficiency. You'll also want to keep in mind the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, which is a measure of how much solar radiation comes through a window, and the U-Factor, which indicates the rate at which a window conducts heat.
Already overwhelmed? Fear not!
